With a new school year approaching, it’s time to start thinking about that all-important first day. A child never gets another first-ever day of school, so to help parents of new students prepare, we want readers to share their wisdom — whether their kids’ first day of school was last year or 30 years ago.

Parents, what would you have done differently on your child’s first day? Sent a love note in your preschooler’s pencil bag? Bought a more durable backpack for your kindergartner? Made sure your batteries were charged in the video camera?

Send a short story (200 words or less) about what you’d do differently on your child’s first day of school, and why, to with “First day of school” in the subject line. Your vignette may be included in a story that publishes in Life & Arts on Aug. 21. Be sure to include your name, city of residence and phone number (not for publication). Anonymous submissions will not be considered, but children’s names do not need to be included.

Deadline for submissions is Aug. 17.
