The Dallas Cowboys aren’t going to risk any of their star players going down in the preseason opener.

Quarterback Tony Romo, tight end Jason Witten and wide receiver Dez Bryant will all sit out the preseason opener tonight against the Chargers.

The Cowboys are also holding out running backs DeMarco Murray and Lance Dunbar, as well as defensive tackle Henry Melton. Melton is coming back from a torn ACL suffered last season.

Romo has been deemed 100 percent since the start of training camp, but has sat out a handful of practices early on. He is recovering from surgery to repair a herniated disk in his back, his second back surgery in the past year.

Other Cowboys out with injuries include defensive backs Jakar Hamilton (concussion), Morris Claiborne (knee), Sterling Moore (groin), Matt Johnson (hamstring) and Barry Church (ankle); linebackers Rolando McClain (quadriceps) and Will Smith (groin); defensive linemen George Selvie (groin), Ben Bass (hamstring) and Terrell McClain (ankle); offensive tackle Darrion Weems (shoulder); and wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe (concussion).

Cornerback Brandon Carr is also out. He is expected to rejoin the team once they return to their Oxnard facility after missing camp to date to be with his ailing mother, who died last week.
