Terrance Mitchell getting noticed

With the Cowboys’ cornerback situation, it isn’t hard to stand out. The team’s three healthy cornerbacks are getting a lot of work.

But seventh-round pick Terrance Mitchell is taking advantage of others’ misfortune.

“It’s been a lot of help just getting my feet wet, being able to get ready,” Mitchell said. “…I’m right there. I feel like I’ve got to keep working, though.”

Mitchell, who played at Oregon, was getting noticed even before Morris Claiborne, Sterling Moore, Dashaun Phillips and Tyler Patmon were banged up. He won praise from the coaches for jumping in line and taking extra reps.

But, like he said, Mitchell has a long way to go.

“I think he’s done OK,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “At times, he does a really good job. He’s a natural competitor. He scratches, claws, fights. Everybody’s mad at him, because he takes every other rep of one- on-ones. He keeps diving in there. But at the end of the day, that’s what you want. You want those kinds of guys on your team. Technically, he has become much more consistent. I think emotionally he needs to become more consistent. But you like the fight; you like the spirit; and he’s certainly gotten better over the last couple of weeks.”

Mitchell even has gotten some first-team reps with Claiborne and Brandon Carr (death in the family) not participating. He is ready for Thursday’s challenge of going against the Chargers.

“I’m looking forward to it a lot,” he said. “That’s what I’m here for, to play in the NFL. I’m excited. …I know they want to see what I’m going to do, so I’ve just got to go execute when it’s live.”
