Davon Coleman is on his way to making the Dallas Cowboys’ roster. The undrafted rookie free agent took some snaps with the first team at under tackle Sunday.

“I’m definitely proud of myself and also feel I have a lot to improve on and just thankful for the opportunity,” Coleman said.

Coleman has practiced at every position in the defensive line, but he said he is more comfortable in the interior. He had 31 tackles for loss and 16 sacks in his college career at Arizona State, and getting in the backfield and being disruptive is what he’s done best so far at training camp.

“He’s a young player, but every day he comes out and does something that flashes at you,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “He has to get better technically. He has to be more consistent. But you see some flash. You see some get off. You see some ability to get away from a blocker as a pass rusher, and ultimately that’s the trait that separates guys.”

Coleman was overshadowed by Will Sutton at Arizona State and went undrafted, mainly because he’s only 6-foot-2, 300 pounds. He had played mostly defensive end until gaining 25 pounds and moving inside as a senior.

He is strong, having bench pressed 225 pounds 35 times at Arizona State’s Pro Day.

Coleman has come a long way in a short time.

“I think I have a lot more to show,” Coleman said. “I know it’s a long way to go, but I’ve definitely come a long way.”
