High school cross-country

Practices begin this week for several Arlington school district varsity cross-country programs, with the first meets coming in the month.

Sam Houston’s first meet will be the Friday Night Hawk Invite on Aug. 22 in Carrollton.

Lamar will begin its season at the Frisco Invitational on Aug. 23, while Martin gets started with the Greenhill 6-Mile Relays the same day in Dallas.

City leagues

Registration runs through August for city T-ball, coach-pitch baseball, kid-pitch baseball and outdoor soccer leagues and adult leagues for softball, kickball and flag football. Registration runs through August, except for kickball and flag football, which will accept sign-ups into September.

Other upcoming registrations include another round of youth lacrosse clinics and adult volleyball, basketball and inline hockey leagues.


YMCA youth sports

Registration is open through Wednesday for the Arlington YMCA’s Enhancing Skills Y soccer camp, which runs Monday through Aug. 15 and costs $19 for full members and $75 for program members.

The camp is open to children ages 5-14 regardless of ability or past playing experience. Players will be required to wear shin guards throughout the camp and bring water and snacks.


Optimist Club youth football

Sign-ups for youth flag and tackle football through the Optimist Club of Arlington continue through Saturday, with activities such as equipment issues and first practices beginning around the same time.

Registration is 9 a.m. to noon at the Optimist Hut, 310 E. Third St.

Southeast Arlington Little League

The Player Development Program for Southeast Arlington Little League runs Friday evenings through Aug. 29. Cost is $125 for eight three-hour sessions.
