Tony Romo expects to sit out Thursday’s preseason opener against the San Diego Chargers, which led to extended work for the quarterback Sunday.

“We’ve talked about it a little bit, and we’re going to be smart,” Romo said. “… Most likely I’ll probably sit out the San Diego game and play in Game 2 and go from there.”

In 2013, Romo sat out the Hall of Fame Game before playing 12 plays against Oakland in the second of five preseason games.

Romo, who had surgery to repair a herniated disk in December, returned to practice Sunday after back-to-back days off. He took the most reps he’s had so far in training camp, throwing 25 passes in 7-on-7 and team drills.

“It feels great to get out here and play,” Romo said. “It felt like a game. I think it’s great to see the kind of execution that we were able to do in a situation like this to just prove a little bit of what we’ve been doing. As a quarterback, that’s a great thing to see.”

The Cowboys practice Monday and Tuesday before departing for San Diego. Romo said he expects to take one of those days off.

Bryant, Wilcox tussle

Dez Bryant loved it.

Bryant, known for how much emotion he shows on the field, had no issues with safety J.J. Wilcox laying a nice hit on him during Sunday’s practice — at least after he calmed down.

Bryant got into Wilcox’s face after the big hit and a fight broke out. Wilcox didn’t back down and threw a few wild haymakers at Bryant. His first clearly landed on Bryant’s facemask.

“J.J. put a nice hit on me,” Bryant said. “He [ticked] me off, but at the end of the day, I loved it. I told him, ‘Keep it coming.’ Hopefully the rest of the guys on that defense — not only the defense, but the offense and the whole team — feed off of that. That’s what it takes to win. That’s what we need to win. You’ve got to have that passion and that love for the game.”

Although Bryant insisted it wasn’t a “cheap shot,” Wilcox admitted it might have been a little too aggressive for practice.

“It’s a good thing he wasn’t looking, because I’m going to tell you he’s a full head of steam at 220 [pounds] coming [at you],” Wilcox said. “So I got a good, little cheap shot on him. But we’re still brothers, and we still talk.”

Either way, it was the first notable scuffle the team has had since cornerback Morris Claiborne and wide receiver Terrance Williams got into it during the first padded practice.

Injuries

The Cowboys lost several players Sunday. Receiver Dezmon Briscoe left with a possible concussion.

Safety Barry Church left with an ankle injury, and safety Jakar Hamilton left with a possible concussion after a hit to the jaw.

Defensive end George Selvie said he has a minor groin injury, which prevented him from doing team work. He said he will practice Monday.

Linebacker Rolando McClain felt cramping in his left hamstring, cutting his day short.

The Cowboys had 11 defenders who didn’t dress out Sunday, including cornerbacks Brandon Carr (death in the family) and Claiborne (knee).

Scandrick’s pick

Orlando Scandrick made arguably the most impressive play Sunday. Yes, better than Bryant’s long TD run off a slant, and Wilcox’s big-time tackle.

Scandrick climbed the ladder, so to speak, to make an acrobatic one-handed pick on a pass Romo said he intended to throw away.

“I just wanted to go up and make a play on the ball,” Scandrick said, “and I did.”

The interception was one of the highlights for Scandrick, who also lost a few battles to Bryant.

“He’s one of the best receivers in the league,” Scandrick said. “I came out here, and I competed. I competed hard, and I feel things would’ve been a little bit different if we were going live, but I don’t make any excuses. He won some battles; I won some battles. It was a great day.”
