Ron Leary started all 16 games at left guard last season, but he trails Mackenzy Bernadeau in the battle for the starting job. Leary missed the first six practices after straining his hamstring in a non-sanctioned conditioning test last week.

“Ron has played a lot of football for us, and he’s still a young player who needs a lot of snaps,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “We’re disappointed he hasn’t been able to get them this first week of camp, but he’ll be back out there.

“There’s a lot of football to be played before this preseason game and really throughout the preseason, so there’s plenty of opportunity for him to show up in this competition.”

Leary passed his physical, and the Cowboys removed him from the non-football injury list. He participated in individual drills during the afternoon practice Thursday. He said he is 100 percent.

“Getting back out here was a big step,” Leary said. “… It’s a long camp. Mack is doing a great job, and it’s competition. Competition is a good thing. ... At the end of the day, the best man is going to play.”

Carr’s mother dies

Cornerback Brandon Carr will arrive at training camp sometime next week after his mother’s funeral. Kathy Carr died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. She was 59.

Kathy Carr’s funeral is Tuesday afternoon in Flint, Mich.

The Cowboys have been supportive of Carr, allowing him to skip the start of camp to be with his mother in her final days.

“He’s been dealing with that situation for awhile,” Garrett said. “She apparently is a very, very strong lady, because she’s been fighting that for at least a couple of years, and Brandon has done a great job being supportive of her and his family and still focusing on what he needs to focus on.

“That’s why he didn’t come out to training camp right from the start. Everyone felt like it was close to that time, so he’s been spending time with his family and with her, and they’ll take care of all those arrangements, and he’ll be out here in the next couple of days.”

Safety J.J. Wilcox missed the final week of training camp last year to be with his mother, Marshell, who died Aug. 13 after a lengthy bout with lupus. He remembers how supportive the Cowboys were for him.

“It helps out a lot,” Wilcox said Thursday. “You don’t understand it until you’re gone, and you think the guys forgot about you, but it definitely helps a part of you not overcoming it but taking it day by day and understanding that guys still love you, and you’re still on their mind.”

Briefly

• Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence had surgery Thursday to repair the fifth metatarsal in his right foot, which was fractured during Tuesday’s practice. The second-round pick is expected back in camp this weekend.

• Cornerback Morris Claiborne sat out Thursday with tendinitis in his right knee. He expects to return to work Saturday after an off day Friday.
