Keller Timber CreekDistrict 5-6A Last season: 2-8 (1-6 in District 4-5A) Key players: RB Recie Saunders (5-8, 175), WR Max Patton (5-8, 170), WR/TE DeShaun Diggs (6-3, 230), DE Chase Dennis (5-11, 245), LB Hunter Powell (5-11, 190), CB Bryce Bennett (5-11, 170), S Camden Ross (6-1, 215). The big picture: Timber Creek High School opened its doors in 2010 and the Falcons have yet to finish with a winning record. Coach Kevin Golden believes 2014 could be the year, thanks to a more experienced defense. Golden started seven sophomores on defense last season and overall, has eight back on defense to make that side of the ball even stronger. “We have excellent speed and experience on the defense, but our weakness is depth on the offensive line,” Golden said. The defense is led by junior linebacker Hunter Powell, who was named the 4-5A Defensive Newcomer of the Year in 2013 after posting 91 tackles. Camden Ross is a senior and finished last year with 67 tackles and one interception. “I have high expectations for us this year. I think we’ll be one of the top teams on defense in the district,” Ross said. As for the offense, the Falcons have six returning starters, including junior running back Recie Saunders. “I got good touches last season as a backup, but I’ve been working hard and am ready to take on the starting role,” Saunders said. The Falcons also have three players (Anthony Millsap, Konner Pittman and Caleb Collins) battling for the quarterback job. Quotable: “It’s good to get Southlake off our schedule, but we’re still going up against good teams that made the playoffs last season, especially a team like Denton Guyer.” — coach Kevin Golden“I welcome any challenge. Personally, I like it. We played a lot of teams last season that will be in our district this season, but I’m excited to play Guyer and see what they can bring.” — S Camden Ross“We’ve been working really hard and I think we have a good chance at making the playoffs this season.” — RB Recie Saunders Notable: With six games at the Keller ISD Athletic Complex, Timber Creek travels a total of 95 miles for 10 regular-season games. The Falcons will open against Nimitz in Irving and finish against Keller Central. New teams on the schedule include Nimitz, Burleson, Denton Ryan and Denton Guyer.
