Brandon Carr will arrive at training camp sometime next week after his mother’s funeral. Kathy Carr died Wednesday after a long battle with cancer. She was 59.

Kathy Carr’s funeral is Tuesday afternoon in Flint, Mich.

The Cowboys have been supportive of Carr, allowing him to skip the start of camp to be with his mother in her final days.

“He’s been dealing with that situation for awhile,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “She apparently is a very, very strong lady, because she’s been fighting that for at least a couple of years, and Brandon has done a great job being supportive of her and his family and still focusing on what he needs to focus on. That’s why he didn’t come out to training camp right from the start. Everyone felt like it was close to that time, so he’s been spending time with his family and with her, and they’ll take care of all those arrangements, and he’ll be out here in the next couple of days.”

J.J. Wilcox missed the final week of training camp last year to be with his mother, Marshell, who died Aug. 13 after a lengthy bout with lupus. He remembers how supportive the Cowboys were for him.

“It helps out a lot,” Wilcox said Thursday. “You don’t understand it until you’re gone, and you think the guys forgot about you, but it definitely helps a part of you not overcoming it but taking it day by day and understanding that guys still love you, and you’re still on their mind.”
