Former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Josh Brent has been released from rehab, completing all the terms from his sentence following a conviction on intoxication manslaughter charges in the death of teammate Jerry Brown.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said during practice Wednesday that Brent is now preparing paperwork for a possible return to the NFL.

“He’s gotten his court work done,” Jones said. “Then it’s my understanding the next step is for him to apply to be able to play again in the NFL.”

Brent, who filed his retirement papers last July, must also meet with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and see if there will be any additional punishment in adherence to the league’s personal conduct policy.

Jones said Brent, 26, should have things in order before the Cowboys complete training camp on Aug. 15.

Brent was sentenced to 10 years’ probation and 180 days in jail. He was released from jail June 15 to finish the remainder of his sentence in a substance abuse center.

Now that that is over, he is ready to resume his football career.

“After talking with his counselors and talking to Jerry Brown’s family, (Brent) is in a good place to resume his career,” Peter Schaefer, Brent’s agent, said. (He has applied for reinstatement to the NFL.”

If Brent returns to the NFL, it will most likely be with the Cowboys.

Jones said Brent can help the Cowboys revamped defensive line.

“Well, he has played at a level before that would help us, yes, and obviously we’re trying to build this defensive line,” Jones said. “I know that one thing for sure, he is contrite and I know he feels one of the best ways to pay his debt to what he feels to the family is to do what he does the best and that is be a football player.

“He’s got it to do, but talking with him there is a lot of resolve there. But he’ll have some high, some real high competitive issues having not played. Then he certainly will have high standards relative to the court and the legal system. But he’ll also have high standards relative to the NFL in my mind if he should get back in.”

Brent played three years with the Cowboys from 2010-2012. He has 41 career tackles and 1.5 sacks. He was seventh round pick in the 2010 supplemental draft out of Illinois.

“I think that the pluses are that he’s had an experience and been through something that will make or break his life,” Jones said. “There’s no place like the NFL to rehab your credibility or show that you are contrite.

“It’s a great opportunity for him under the circumstances to have made the mistake that he made to do some real good, help a lot of people and basically leave a better taste in people’s mouths about Josh Brent.”
