Stephen Jones: Team wants Dez Bryant to be a “Cowboy for life”

With Tyron Smith locked up through 2023, the Dallas Cowboys will now shift their attention to extending star receiver Dez Bryant.

Executive vice president Stephen Jones said the Cowboys are “working hard” with Bryant’s representatives to lock up the receiver for the foreseeable future.

“We’re totally committed to make Dez a Cowboy for life,” Jones said. “Our plans from Day 1 … figure a way to get Dez and Tryon extended.”

Smith, 23, reached an eight-year extension to his existing deal with the team that will take him through 2023 and pay him $109.714 million over the next 10 years.

That deal makes Smith the highest paid offensive linemen in the NFL, and Bryant is expected to only agree to a deal that makes him among the highest paid receivers.

Bryant is in the final year of his rookie contract and will make $1.78 million in base salary this season. That is a bargain for a player coming off a Pro Bowl season in which he had 1,233 receiving yards with 13 touchdowns. It was his second consecutive season with at least 1,200 receiving yards and 13 TDs.

Several of the top receivers in the NFL are making more than $10 million annually, including Chicago’s Brandon Marshall, Kansas City’s Dwayne Bowe, Arizona’s Larry Fitzgerald and Detroit’s Calvin Johnson. The Packers recently signed Jordy Nelson to a four-year, $39.8 million extension before beginning training camp.

Asked if he expected to pay a premium rate for Smith and Bryant, Jones said: “Each situation is different. You just look at what makes sense for both sides and I’m convinced we can get Dez done.”

Jones, though, wouldn’t speculate on when a potential deal with Bryant might be reached.

“I don’t guess on when things get done,” Jones said.
