When the Dallas Cowboys opened training camp Wednesday, coach Jason Garrett said quarterback Tony Romo would be “full go” when practices began.

Two days later, with Romo missing the afternoon practice Friday, Garrett acknowledged that the plan all along was to be mindful of Romo’s December back surgery to repair a herniated disk and to bring him along slowly early in camp. Romo watched Friday’s afternoon practice in street clothes.

“The idea was just to be mindful of his back,” Garrett said. “We talked about this beforehand with all of our players. Whenever they are coming back, to be mindful of the two-a-days and what they are doing. I think the schedule sets up pretty well for him the next few days. It gives him a chance to get himself settled in. We will keep an eye on him every day.”

Garrett said Romo will take all the first-team reps Saturday afternoon after essentially sitting out two practices — Friday afternoon and Saturday morning’s special teams practice.

Garrett said the Cowboys will take a similar approach with defensive tackle Henry Melton, who is coming off season-ending knee surgery.

McClain update

Linebacker Rolando McClain was expected to fly back to training camp Friday after a judge convicted him of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct in his Alabama hometown and imposed an 18-day jail term.

McClain immediately appealed the decision. No date his been set when the case will be heard again, allowing him to return to the Cowboys.

McClain missed the first two days of training camp, but was expected be on hand for Saturday’s practices.

Municipal Judge Billy Cook convicted McClain on the misdemeanor counts after a non-jury trial that lasted about three hours. McClain was accused of yelling an obscenity at police trying to arrest him during a disturbance in a crowded city park in 2013.

Cook also ordered McClain to pay $1,572 in fines and court costs.

The judge signed a document stating McClain, 25, was free to leave the state while challenging the conviction.

Carr on personal time

Cornerback Brandon Carr remains absent from training camp to be with his ailing mother

Carr has missed the first two days, and there is no timetable on his return.

Garrett said the team will give him all the time he needs to be with his mother and her declining health.

“I texted back and forth with him [Thursday],” Garrett said. “The situation with his mom has been going on for a while. We are trying to give him all the freedom he needs to handle that situation the right way.”

Newhouse services

Funeral services have been set for former Cowboys fullback Robert Newhouse, who died Tuesday at the age of 64.

A wake will be held from 7-8 p.m. Thursday at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home in Dallas.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Prestonwood Baptist Church. A public reception will follow the services.
