Justin Northwest graduate Desiree Freier celebrated her 18th birthday with a silver medal in the women’s pole vault Thursday night at the IAAF world junior championships in Eugene, Ore.

Freier set an American junior record with a mark of 14 feet, 7 1/4 inches. Russia’s Alena Lutkovskaya cleared 14-9 1/4 to win the gold. Freier missed on her three attempts at that height.

The junior championships are for athletes born from 1995 through 1998.
