For the fifth year, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Roanoke, will be raising money in July to help kids in need at Christmas time.

The women will hold their "Rockin ’50s Christmas in July" on July 26 at the Veterans of Foreign War Post at 705 N. Oak St., in Roanoke.

"We usually adopt 20 kids," Ladies Auxiliary President Mona Benotti said.

The auxiliary has 110 members from Keller, Roanoke, Argyle, Southlake, Westlake, Trophy Club, Rhome, Grapevine.

"We have a pretty widespread membership," Benotti said.

The event, which starts with a fried chicken dinner from 5-6:30 p.m. for a $10 donation, will include an auction, games, country store and a raffle.

"Already, we have received donations for items such as Texas Ranger tickets, Texas Motor Speedway tickets," she said.

Other auction items include a patio or "man cave" table from PBR, gift baskets with toiletries, coffees, other sweet stuff, Chef Ed cooking services, golf clubs, a Pat Maples knife, brand new quilt, and silk wreaths, Benotti said.

She said a wooden cooler made with barn wood from the old VFW fence will be auctioned.

"For the country store, we have canned beets and pickles, small floral arrangements, home-baked items and candy jars," Benotti said.

Last year, the organization raised $6,481 and Benotti said she hopes the group can beat that this year.

The auxiliary has been active since the Roanoke Post opened in 1967.
