The Dallas Cowboys signed veteran receiver Dezmon Briscoe to the roster a day before leaving for training camp.

Former Texas defensive tackle Chris Whaley was waived to clear a roster space.

Briscoe, a former sixth-round pick of the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, is a Dallas native who played in high school at Cedar Hill.

Briscoe was released in camp by the Bengals, but landed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers later that year. He spent two seasons with the Buccaneers before playing with the Washington Redskins in 2012.

He was on injured reserve all last season with a shoulder injury. The Redskins did not offer him contract after the season.

Briscoe has 43 career catches for 502 yards and seven touchdowns in 25 games.

The 6-foot-2 Briscoe adds another big, fast receiver to their stable. Eight of the 11 receivers on the team's training camp roster stand at least 6-1, including Briscoe, Dez Bryant, Chris Boyd, LaRon Byrd, Jamar Newsome, Devin Street, Terrance Williams and L'Damian Washington.

The release of Whaley, an undrafted rookie free agent, is not a surprise because he is still hobbled by a knee injury suffered last season at Texas. The Cowboys waived him with a non-football injury and would likely try to bring him back and place him on the NFI list if he clears waivers, allowing this to serve as redshirt season for him.

The team also signed free agent tight end Dallas Walker, who played in two preseason games with San Diego last season before being released. He was out of football in 2012 after finishing his collegiate career at Western Michigan.
