The Dallas Mavericks made it official Thursday when they signed guard Devin Harris to a four-year, $16.55 million free-agent contract.

After missing half of last season following off-season foot surgery, Harris, 31, averaged 7.9 points and 4.5 assists in 20.5 minutes per game in the second half of the season. He also was the point guard the Mavs turned to on numerous occasions during crunch time.

The Mavs would like to continue having Harris in a backup point guard role. That means he would be playing behind newcomer Raymond Felton, who was recently acquired in a trade with the New York Knicks.

Russell collapses

Boston Celtics officials say NBA Hall of Famer Bill Russell is doing OK after collapsing during a speaking engagement near Lake Tahoe, Nev.

Team spokesman Brian Olive said the 80-year-old Russell felt faint after the Thursday morning fall at a resort, but was planning on returning home that evening.

Witness Michael Rooney told The Associated Press that Russell was telling a story about Wilt Chamberlain to a roomful of Konica Minolta employees when he started to sway at the podium and then fell backward.

Rooney said Russell seemed to be conscious as hotel personnel and first responders came to his aid.

Cavs dangle Wiggins

The Cleveland Cavaliers finally have shown a willingness to include No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins in a potential trade for Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star forward Kevin Love, USA Today reported.

Love can opt out of his contract after this season and has said he won’t re-sign with Minnesota.

LeBron James has reached out to tell Love that he’d like to play together in Cleveland.

Briefly

• Lakers: Los Angeles won the rights to former Bulls forward Carlos Boozer after posting the highest bid in the amnesty waiver process. Teams under the salary cap could bid on Boozer. The Lakers’ winning bid will be subtracted from the $16.8 million the Bulls are responsible for paying.

• Clippers: Forward Glen Davis, who joined Los Angeles in February, agreed to a one-year deal for $1.2 million, the veteran minimum.

• Wizards: David Adkins, a former assistant coach at Montrose Christian School when Kevin Durant played there, was hired as a player development assistant.

• Suns: Free agent Eric Bledsoe and Phoenix remain far apart in contract talks. The Suns have offered a four-year, $48 million contract but the point guard wants a five-year, $80 million deal, according to ESPN.com.

• Thunder: Grant Jerrett, a 6-10 forward who averaged 15 points and six rebounds last year in the D-League, signed a multiyear deal.
