After matching seven scoreless innings, Rio Grande Valley put up three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to defeat the Fort Worth Cats 3-2 and maintain a firm grip on first place in United League Baseball.

In the top of the eighth, Fort Worth’s Oscar Garcia knocked in a run, and Jose Duran scored on an outfield error for a 2-0 Cats lead.

The WhiteWings (33-12) cut the Cats’ lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the eighth on an RBI single off reliever Chase Johnson (2-3). Rio Grande Valley tied the game on an error at first, and chalked up the go-ahead run on an RBI double off Johnson.

Cats right-hander Trent Montgomery took a no-decision after going 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits and three walks. He struck out three.

Starter Ryan Bonnot also went 7 2/3 for RGV.

Reliever Chris Peacock (4-0) got the victory for the WhiteWings after throwing a third of an inning to end the eighth.

Byron Minnich picked up the save for Rio Grande Valley, retiring the last three Cats in order.

Fort Worth’s Duran was 2 for 4 with an RBI as the Cats fell to 26-20.
