The Dallas Stars’ three-day training camp in Fort Worth will include a celebration in Sundance Square.

Stars president and CEO Jim Lites said the organization hopes to make its three-day training camp Sept. 19-21 at the Fort Worth Convention Center a “great” experience the second time around.

Details on the pep rally and other events will be announced closer to training camp, Lites said.

Similar to last year, the Stars will be on the ice for practice every day, including an intrasquad scrimmage on Sept. 21.

All practices are open to the public and free.

Lites and the Stars’ operations staff gave Fort Worth high praise for the hospitality shown by city officials, convention center management and the Omni Hotel staff.

“It was pretty magical,” Lites said. “We kind of accomplished everything that the hockey department wanted to have. It’s just a really good environment for the players away from their families without all the hassle of going someplace remote.”

The Stars’ first preseason game is Sept. 22 against the St. Louis Blues at the American Airlines Center. The season opener is Oct. 9 against the Chicago Blackhawks, also at the AAC.

Last season the Stars reached the playoffs for the first time in five years.

“[Training camp] was a kickoff to a great year,” Lites said. “We anticipate the same thing this year. We engaged a lot of customers in Fort Worth because of it.”

Around the NHL

• Blues: St. Louis re-signed center Steve Ott to a two-year, $5.2 million contract. Ott, 31, was acquired in the Ryan Miller deal from Buffalo on Feb. 28. He is a former 2000 first-round pick of the Stars.

• Sharks: Unrestricted free agent defenseman Scott Hannan, 35, re-signed to a one-year, $1 million contract.

• Red Wings: Winger Daniel Cleary agreed to a one-year contract worth at least $1.5 million.

• Panthers: Defenseman Erik Gudbranson, the third overall pick in 2010, signed a two-year extension.

• AHL: The American Hockey League is changing its overtime rules for next season. The sudden-death period expands from five minutes to seven and will have four-on-four play for three minutes followed by three-on-three action for the remainder.
