Neftali Feliz has returned to the Texas Rangers’ bullpen, though mainly because of the need for a relievers who can provide innings during a stretch of 20 games in 20 days.

Feliz had the numbers of late at Triple A Round Rock to earn a promotion, with submarining right-hander Ben Rowen going back to the Express, but the scouting reports weren’t entirely favorable.

The Rangers want to see Feliz attack from the outset of his appearances. He had shown a tendency of getting in trouble quickly in innings before wiggling free.

He will likely pitch in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, and he can give the Rangers multiple innings. He is not back with the team to be its closer.

“Neffy is not coming here to be the closer and unseat Joakim Soria as closer,” manager Ron Washington said. “Let’s make that clear.”

Feliz said that Triple A Round Rock pitching coach Brad Holman to iron out his mechanics to the point where they were repeatable. Feliz, who was sent to the minors during spring training, has also put more of a focus on keep pitches down.

“I kept working every day,” Feliz said. “I didn’t try to be frustrated. That’s not my job.”
