Friday’s anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence reminds us again of its stirring thoughts of “unalienable rights” including “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” of governments “deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed,” but also its caution that governments “should not be changed for light and transient causes.” Some people believe that Americans’ rights and liberties are under grave threat today.
