Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana offered some career advice to Johnny Manziel, a rookie who plays the same position and has the same initials.

Montana said early in his own career he liked to party but that his coach, the late Bill Walsh, imparted some words of wisdom that might apply to Manziel.

“I was going everywhere, trying to do everything,” Montana told NFL Network. “[Walsh] called me in and said, ‘I just want to tell you one thing. I understand what you’re doing. ... But just remember this, the less people see you, the more they want to see you.’

“Basically he was saying it’s OK to do some things, but try to cut it back. And don’t forget about football, because that’s what got you there and that is what’s going to keep you there.”

Briefly

• Officiating: First-year official Brad Allen will join the NFL as a referee, the first to go to the referee position in his first NFL season since Tommy Bell in 1962. Allen was a referee the past nine seasons in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

• Redskins: Receiver Jerry Rice Jr., son of the Hall of Fame receiver, signed after tryouts with Baltimore and San Francisco.

• NFL N etwork: A replay of Super Bowl XXXIV between St. Louis and Tennessee will air at 8 p.m. with Kurt Warner, who quarterbacked the Rams in that game, providing commentary during the game.
