Oklahoma football coach Bob Stoops’ salary will jump to $5.25 million for the upcoming season.

The new figure was approved by the school’s board of regents. The total is up from about $5 million last season.

Stoops’ base salary will remain $325,000. He receives $700,000 for staying at Oklahoma. His income from private funds will increase from $3,725,000 to $4,025,000.

Defensive coordinator Mike Stoops, Bob’s brother, got a raise, too. His salary increased to $850,000 for next season, up $200,000.

Oklahoma went 11-2 last season to take Stoops’ career record to 160-39.

The Sooners defeated Alabama 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl after last season to position itself as one of the favorites to contend for the national championship in 2014.

Canion honored

All-American pitcher Whitney Canion of Baylor was honored as the Big 12 female Sportsperson of the Year. Oklahoma football center Gabe Ikard was the male Sports-person of the Year.

Canion, from Aledo, led the Bears to the softball World Series this year, posting a 31-12 record.

She was also recognized for her sportsmanship, work in community service and academic achievement.

UNT gets transfer

J’Mychal Reese, a 6-foot-1 point guard from Bryan who played the past two seasons at Texas A&M before being dismissed for rules violations, announced on Twitter that he will play at North Texas, according to the Denton Record-Chronicle.

Reese averaged 6.2 points and started 25 games as a freshman. He played in just six games last year and averaged seven points and two rebounds.

He will have two years of eligibility remaining but is expected to have to sit out the 2014-15 season because of NCAA transfer rules.

Briefly

• Kansas State football: Former quarterback and 2012 Heisman finalist Collin Klein told GoPowerCats.com that he is set to become a member of Bill Snyder’s coaching staff.

• LSU basketball: David Patrick, a valuable recruiter on head coach Johnny Jones’ staff since 2012, was promoted to assistant head coach.

• SMU basketball: Justin Martin is transferring to SMU from Xavier and is expected to be eligible next season. The 6-foot-6 forward was a starter the last two of his three seasons with the Musketeers. Martin was second on the team in scoring (11.7 points per game) and rebounding (5.2) as a junior.
