Eats Beat: In Arlington, a new burger contender rises

kennedy Our next DFW Burger Battle is a whole summer away.

But it may already have a new contender: Mo’s Best Eatery.

The Zaben family’s new, tiny take-out shop in southwest Arlington has been a fast success. Owner “Mo” Zaben is already talking about a larger location.

Mo’s is known for huge sandwiches like the 1-pound Philly or 1-pound pastrami.

Or the pizza, which Zaben calls “Northeast-style.”

Or the shawarma and baba ghannoush, which he learned from family members and cooking in a Greek-owned restaurant in East Windsor, Conn.

Or fried chicken, of all things.

But on top of all that, Mo’s serves a gloriously juicy, drippy burger. It’s made from four cuts of beef, including New York strip steak and brisket, Zaben said. But it’s also seasoned and grilled to order.

“I do my special blend of five or six spices,” he said.

A one-third-pound burger ($6) came out much larger.

“Mo” says he came to Arlington from Connecticut for a cousin’s wedding and decided to stay.

“I looked around and there are a lot of chains but not enough local restaurants,” he said. “I decided to open really small and just see if it would work.”

If he moves, it may be closer to Pantego or UTA. Students have taken to Mo’s.

“I think I’d be ready for someplace bigger,” he said. (The current Mo’s only has a couple of tables.)

A weakness for Restaurant Week

If it’s nearly July, it can’t be long till DFW Restaurant Week.

The annual charity restaurant promotion offers discount dinners Aug. 11-17, with some restaurants extending the deals through Labor Day.

“Reservation day,” when diners rush to book the best restaurants, is July 14. That’s the first day to grab a table.

(Tarrant County bookings partially benefit the Lena Pope Home children’s agency.)

This year, DFW Restaurant Week will begin with a $50 Aug. 7 party at Fair Park featuring Texas de Brazil steak and Max’s Wine Dive tomato salad.
