The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department identified the man fatally shot late Sunday by an off-duty Arlington policeman in the parking lot of a Duncanville restaurant.

Juan May, 45, was pronounced dead at Methodist Charlton Medical Center, sheriff’s spokeswoman Carmen Castro said. His town of residence was not reported.

The Arlington officer, who was not identified, is on routine administrative leave with pay, Arlington police said in a news release. He has been with the department for eight years. His name was not released at the request of the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department, police said.

May was shot about 12:40 a.m. in the parking lot of Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen, 800 E. U.S. 67 in Duncanville.

The off-duty officer had been on a party bus tour with at least 20 other people. The group’s meeting place was the Pappadeaux parking lot, and the bus was returning there, Castro said in an email.

An altercation between the officer and May resulted in a shooting, Castro said.

“Since this is an ongoing investigation, no statements will be released,” Sgt. Jeffrey Houston, an Arlington police spokesman, said Sunday in an email.

Arlington police will conduct an administrative investigation of the officer, he said.

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Department will handle the criminal investigation. Deputies were initially asked to help collect physical evidence and were later asked to handle the investigation, Castro said in an email.

Smaller law enforcement agencies tend to have limited resources, Castro’s email said. The Duncanville department employs 63 sworn officers and 16 civilians, according to the city website. Duncanville had an estimated 2013 population of more than 39,600, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“It’s normal for responding agencies to ask another agency to do a thorough investigation,” Castro said.
