A year ago, Tarleton State’s Billy Bob Brown clinched the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association team roping heading and men’s all-around titles after competing in the College National Finals Rodeo.

Brown is also off to a fast start at the 2014 CNFR, which is running this week in Casper, Wyo.

While competing in the first round Monday, Brown and his partner, Logan Medlin of Eastern New Mexico, finished No. 1 with a time of 4.8 seconds. Brown also finished fifth in the opening round of tie-down roping with a 9.3.

In bareback riding, Tarleton’s Richmond Champion finished second in the first round with a 79. Jared Parsonage of Weatherford College won the bull riding first round with an 81.

In barrel racing, Jaime Barrow of Tarleton came in second in Round 1 after turning in a 14.13.

The six-day College National Finals concludes Saturday.

High school update

Brody Yeary of Brock clinched the 2014 Texas High School Rodeo Association bull riding title after competing last weekend in Abilene.

Yeary finished No. 1 after earning 49 points throughout the regular season and the state finals. Tristan Mize of Bryan finished second with 45.

After clinching the state title, Yeary will advance to the National High School Finals, which is scheduled for July 13-19 in Rock Springs, Wyo.

Chase Wilson of Decatur also earned a berth in the nationals. He clinched the steer wrestling title after finishing with 66.5 points. Maverick Harper of Stephenville finished second with 45.

Kambria McDougal of Weatherford finished No. 1 in the state breakaway roping title race after earning 50 points, four more than runner-up Kellie Collier of Hereford.

Brazile watch

Trevor Brazile of Decatur has surpassed $100,000 in regular season earnings on the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association circuit for a record 17th consecutive season.

Brazile, who is attempting to win a record 12th world all-around title, reached the milestone after finishing in the money at three rodeos last weekend.

Brazile and team roping partner Travis Graves each earned $2,775 after tying for first at the Parker County Frontier Days and PRCA Rodeo in Weatherford.

At the 101 Wild West Rodeo in Ponca City, Okla., Brazile pocketed $3,538 after winning the steer roping title. He also collected $1,603 after winning the all-around title at the Coleman PRCA Rodeo.

In the PRCA world all-around standings, Brazile is ranked No. 1 with $108,265. Russell Cardoza of Terrebonne, Ore., is No. 2 with $38,477.

Brazile also is ranked No. 1 in steer roping, third in team roping and sixth in tie-down roping.

Big match

J.W. Harris, who has earned four PRCA bull riding titles, would have earned $100,000 last weekend on the Professional Bull Riders circuit had he made a qualified ride on Bushwacker, the defending PBR World Champion Bull, at a Touring Pro Show in Bismarck, N.D.

Harris, who lives near Brownwood, was denied the six-figure paycheck as the result of bucking off in less than 4 seconds.
