Baylor sprinter wins NCAA 100 meters crown

Baylor freshman Trayvon Bromell set a world junior record in the 100 meters of 9.97 seconds Friday night at the NCAA track and field championships in Eugene, Ore.

Bromell is the first freshman to win the 100 since Florida State’s Walter Dix in 2005. FSU senior Dentarius Locke, who had the nation’s fastest time going into the championships, was second. UT Arlington’s Clayton Vaughn was sixth in 10.19.

“I jumped out of the blocks and just held my own,” Bromell said.

Alabama junior Remona Burchell won the women’s 100 in a wind-aided 11.25. Morolake Akinosun of Texas was second in 11.33.

Texas A&M freshman Shamier Little won the women’s 400 hurdles in a school-record 55.07. Teammate Janeil Bellille was third in 56.14. Nebraska senior Miles Ukaoma outkicked the field in the final 100 to win the men’s 400 hurdles in 49.23.

Texas A&M’s Deon Lendore won the men’s 400 in 45.02. In the women’s 400, two-time defending champion Ashley Spencer of Texas did not make it to the final because of a quad injury during the semifinal, but sophomore teammate Courtney Okolo won the title in 50.23.

Arizona senior Lawi Lalang out-kicked Oregon freshman Edward Cheserek to win the 5,000 in a meet-record 13 minutes, 18.36 seconds for his eighth NCAA title.

Alabama freshman Lakan Taylor of Saginaw Boswell was 15th in the pole vault after clearing 13 feet, 3 1/2 inches.

• Oregon football: Redshirt sophomore defensive back Eric Amoako, a former Arlington Martin standout, will transfer from the University of Oregon, according to The Oregonian. Amoako’s twin brother, Stephen, is expected to stay with the Ducks.
