You know the situation. We’ve all been there. You’re getting ready to go and, as you slip your top or dress over your head, you try your best to prevent it from bunching under an armpit along the way. If it does, you know you’ll have to deal with the hassle of removing deodorant stains from the garment.

I’ve tried repeatedly to find a way around this. My main strategy has been to search for a deodorant that is actually “invisible” upon application. So far, I haven’t found it. But recently, I came across a product that claims a life of deodorant-free clothing is possible. Dare I hope?

Created by Hollywood Fashion Secrets, the deodorant removing sponge was designed to remove smudges from fabrics in a matter of seconds — without the use of water or soap. (Note: The Hollywood Fashion Secrets brand positions itself as an authority on products that eliminate various wardrobe malfunctions.) In addition, this product is also touted as being capable of removing makeup and pet hair with ease. It is available for $5 on the Hollywood Fashion Secrets website ( https://hollywoodfashionsecrets.com), but I also found it at a local Wal-Mart for the same price.

First impression

When I first opened up the package, I was kind of taken aback. By all appearances, it is nothing more than a glorified square sponge. Thinking that there surely must be more to the deodorant removing sponge, I checked the info on the packaging to see what exactly makes this sponge so special and found nothing. On the brand’s website, the product is vaguely described as being “specially fabricated,” with no specifics about what that means. My questions went unanswered, but I remained hopeful anyway, knowing that if the product really did what it was supposed to do, I probably wouldn’t care much about what it was made from.

Fab or flub?

Fab. As promised, Hollywood Fashion Secrets deodorant removing sponge removed deodorant stains from my clothes without the use of water or soap. To ensure that I really put it to the test, I used it on several different items made from differing fabrics, including cotton, polyester and silk. Overall, I saw great results on every single spot test except for the silk. Though the sponge did remove the deodorant’s white residue from the silk, it also left a greasy stain that could not be lifted.

Based on my experience, I wouldn’t say that using the sponge was hard. Though I do think it requires a little more arm work than the “brisk rubbing” mentioned in the instructions. Besides deodorant, I also tested the sponge for its pet-hair removal abilities and it delivered on this promise, too, although it didn’t seem any better at this than an ordinary pet hair roller.

Despite my overall positive experience, I’m still slightly hesitant to recommend that folks run out and pay $5 for a single piece of square sponge — regular or otherwise. When I showed the product to a co-worker, he remarked that it looked and felt like the makeup sponges that his wife uses. I myself wondered whether I might get the same or similar results with an ordinary sponge. It’s something I’ll have to try. But, in terms of waterless washing, the Hollywood Fashion Secrets product seems a good thing to keep stashed in a purse or makeup bag for potential fashion emergencies. And I’ll confess that it has made my mornings easier and kept my clothes free of deodorant smudge marks.
