Hillary Rodham Clinton has spent 40 years in service to her country — student activist, attorney, first lady, senator and U.S. secretary of state (No. 67) for the Obama administration, 2009-13.

She’s also a bestselling author — It Takes a Village and her 2003 memoir, Living History, that followed her from her childhood through the White House years and her tenure as a controversial first lady.

Her new memoir, Hard Choices, begins with her “painful” loss to Barack Obama in the 2008 presidential primaries and a surprise invitation from her former rival to become the nation’s top diplomat.

This is her reflection on her “unexpected partnership and friendship” with the president and on those tumultuous four years on the world stage, during which she visited 112 countries, traveled almost a million miles and dealt with global crises, from wars and revolutions to the hunt for Osama bin Laden. And don’t forget the scrutiny of her hairdos.

“All of us face hard choices in our lives,” she writes. “Life is about making such choices. Our choices and how we handle them shape the people we become.”
