Add a medical dictionary to the required reading list of North Texas sports fans.

Over the past few months fans have witnessed an inordinate number of serious injuries to prominent athletes, from Rich Peverly to Prince Fielder to, most recently, Sean Lee.

Words like microfracture, spondylolisthesis and cervical-fusion surgery are now as much a part of our vocabulary as spread offense, hit-and-run and pick-and-roll.

The injuries are not an excuse for the mediocrity that our teams seem to embrace, but they certainly are a contributing factor.
