Ron Washington: I should’ve waited for first review on double challenge

A double challenge on a single play isn’t something you’re going to see every day, but it happened in the Rangers-Nationals game Sunday. And the Rangers were on the losing end of each one that wiped out a run for them.

The Rangers thought they had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs and runners at the corners, Alex Rios bolted for second and Elvis Andrus broke for home once Nationals catcher Wilson Ramos threw to second.

Rios was safe initially, but he slid past the bag and was called out by umpire Scott Barry. There was no return throw home and home-plate umpire Clint Fagan ruled that Andrus scored before Rios’ out.

Each manager had an issue with the play, though. Ron Washington thought Rios was safe at second, while Nationals manager Matt Williams believed the run shouldn’t have counted.

After a 2:45 review, each call went against the Rangers. Rios was confirmed out and they overturned the ruling on Andrus, who didn’t cross the plate in time.

“I might have reacted too soon,” Washington said. “I should’ve waited until the first challenge was over.”
