Hallsville’s saving grace Thursday in its 3-2 win against Mansfield Legacy at Tillery Field wasn’t the above-average curve ball of its starting pitcher or its powerful bats — it was a simple pickoff move.

Trailing 3-1 in Game 1 of the Class 4A Region II finals, Legacy strung together a few walks and hits in the top of the fourth to load the bases on Hallsville starter and TCU signee Connor Reich.

With two outs and a full count on left fielder Chad Watkins, Hallsville put on a daylight pickoff play, triggering a spin move from Reich (11-1) when the shortstop got in-between the runner and second base.

The 3-2 count had the runner taking off on the first movement from the pitcher, pulling him too far off the bag to dive back safely. The out ended the inning and the threat.

Legacy (29-12) chased Reich in the sixth when catcher Corey Murray took the starter’s 111th pitch well over the right-field wall, just shy of a water tower, pulling the Broncos within a run at 3-2.

Legacy reliever Daniel Drzycimski shut down Hallsville (33-4) in order in the top of the seventh, giving the Broncos a chance in the bottom of the final inning.

Drzycimski pitched four innings in relief, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out four.

Legacy led off the bottom of the seventh with a slow, seeing-eye single by left fielder Chad Williams that trickled just inside third base.

Williams then stole second, but that would be as far as he would reach as Hallsville reliever Logan Bailey shut down the middle of Legacy’s lineup to secure the victory.

The regional final series will continue Saturday in Mesquite due to Hallsville’s Friday graduation.
