When Courtney Ray saw Adam Scott sink the winning putt on Sunday at the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, she jumped up and cheered.

What happened next, she never could have imagined.

“He chucked that ball all the way across the water and it literally was coming straight for us,” said Ray, 23, of Frisco, who was at Colonial for the first time with her parents, Sue and Mike. “My mom and I teamed up and got it.”

Seconds later, a fellow patron rushed up to her and offered $5,000 for the Titleist 3, but she quickly turned him down. “It’s Adam Scott’s winning ball, so I said, ‘No way.’

Added her mom, Sue: “It means a lot more to her.”

Ray, who recently graduated from LSU, just returned to Dallas-Fort Worth from a backpacking trip in Australia, of all places. So she was rooting for Scott.

A former high school golfer, she will be adding Scott’s winning Titleist to a shrine in her room that includes her own two hole-in-one scorecards and a golf glove signed by Ian Poulter at the Zurich Classic.

But Scott’s winning ball from Colonial will become her new crowned jewel.

“I’m still shaking,” Ray said later after Scott, in his new plaid jacket, signed the ball and posed for photos with her. “He asked me if I had a good time in Australia and I congratulated him on winning the Colonial.”

Bird’s Nest at No. 13

The 13th hole at Colonial has long been the hot spot during tournament week, but this was the inaugural run for the Bird’s Nest tent in the far back corner behind the green.

Fort Worth based RXpress Pharmacy is in its first year with a stand-alone tent and landed a prime spot with an all-encompassing view of the scenic 190-yard Par 3 over water.

On the week that they moved into their new building in downtown Fort Worth, RXpress welcomed doctors from all over the country.

“This has been bigger anything than we could have ever imagined,” said Katie Heckman, marketing coordinator for RXpress Pharmacy. “We have had a great support from all of our doctors and all of our reps to make this a huge success. They do so much for us that this is the least we could do to say thank you to them.”

Veranda tent

Right in the middle of the party at No. 13 was the Veranda, a covered private hospitality tent for Wells Fargo.

They have had a tent in this location during Colonial week for more than 20 years, hosting customers and clients on a covered outdoor platform.

“We enjoy this week like this spot because it is a lot of fun and there is a lot of great people watching and golf watching,” said Candy Nickelson, regional marketing manager for Wells Fargo. “We also like being here to support Colonial’s charities while giving us an opportunity to thank our customers and clients.”

Nickelson also said that hole marshals had come up on several occasions to quiet the rowdy, enthusiastic crowd.

Citi connection

In its first year at Colonial, the Citi Cardmember Club had an air-conditioned tent exclusively for Citi card members. Between the No. 15 and No. 17 fairways, the new spot featured a full bar where guests could pay using their Citi card and a large outdoor patio looking out to the 15th hole.

Guests could also get their photo taken in a replica of the plaid jacket given to the Colonial champion. Like the official jacket, this one was designed by Barry Smith, owner of William Barry Distinctive Apparel.

After having their picture made, fans had access to an iPad station to share their photo on social media.

Staff writer Rick Press and correspondent Kevin Casas contributed to this report.
