A suspected drunken driver crashed into an Arlington officer’s patrol car early Sunday as the officer was responding to a major accident call, police said Sunday.

By coincidence, the police officer was on DWI patrol at the time of the wreck.

The officer, who was not identified, and the driver were treated at Medical Center of Arlington and later released.

Arlington police identified the motorist as Paulino Zamarripa, 53, of Arlington. He was arrested after being discharged, facing a charge of driving while intoxicated.

The crash was reported about 1 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of South Cooper Street in Arlington.

The officer was driving southbound on Cooper when a driver pulled out in front of him from a side street, according to Arlington police news release.

Zamarripa, who was released from jail after posting $1,000 bail, could not be reached Sunday.
