Lubbock Monterey outlasted Cleburne 2-0 in 11 innings in Game 3 of the Class 4A Region I semifinals Saturday at Cooper High School.

The Plainsmen (32-9) scored two runs in the top of the 11th, and Monterey pitcher Shea Nixon retired the Yellow Jackets (30-6-1) in order in the bottom half to secure the win.

Monterey advances to the 4A Region I finals against Aledo, with the date and site pending. Aledo (31-6) defeated Wolfforth Frenship 4-2 on Saturday to sweep its series.

In the 11th, Cleburne pitcher Jacob Martin allowed a leadoff walk to Nixon. Garrett Buckner replaced Martin, and Monterey’s Evan Brake got aboard on a hit-by-pitch.

After Mike Mercado’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third base, pinch hitter Blake Hohenberger hit a two-run single on a full count to break the scoreless deadlock.

Monterey starting pitcher Hunter Spaeth took a no-hitter into the sixth inning, but it was broken up by Dylan Schneider’s single. Spaeth went six innings, allowing two hits and four walks with eight strikeouts. Nixon (5-3) threw the final four innings to get the win, allowing one hit and three walks.

Martin pitched 10 innings in defeat. He allowed seven hits, six walks and one run with 10 strikeouts.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Jackets loaded the bases with only one out. Daniel Richardson hit a short fly to right field, but Buckner was thrown out at the plate as the potential winning run.

Hohenberger was the only player in the three-game series to record at least one RBI in all three games.

Monterey’s Travon Benton was the only player in Game 3 to record more than one base hit (2 for 3, walk).
