From the bleachers, Colonial’s ninth hole is very pretty to look at with its stone-encircled green off the small pond that skirts the left side of the hole.

On the fairway Friday, No. 9 turned into a nightmare for many of the tournament’s leaders.

Chris Stroud, who is tied for second after two rounds, dropped his second shot on nine over the bleachers on the back left side of the green, forcing him to take a free drop because of an immovable obstruction.

Still, Stroud took one of his two bogeys on the day.

“It really was a good drop, but the grass was really gnarly, so I had to hit a low runner, and I was actually pretty happy just to get it over and out of trouble,” Stroud said.

“But with it being like that, I couldn’t take the chance of hitting the tree and going in the water.”

The world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, Adam Scott, also had an interesting scramble on nine. His tee shot bounced off the media center, which is located on the right side of the fairway.

He was forced to lay up with his second shot to the left rough then two-putted for a bogey. It would be his only bogey of the day.

The hole relinquished just 11 birdies on the day.
