Adam Scott in, Matt Kuchar out after cuts at Colonial

Two of Colonial’s star attractions needed late rallies Friday to earn spots in weekend play.

Adam Scott, the world’s top-ranked golfer, is staying around for the weekend, extending his PGA Tour-leading streak to 34 consecutive cuts made.

Meanwhile, Matt Kuchar is headed home after becoming a cut casualty for only the eighth time in five years.

Scott, who appeared to find a comfort zone with his irons, marked down three birdies on the back nine to shoot a 2-under 68 in the second round of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial.

Kuchar, the world’s fourth-ranked golfer, followed a 2-over first round with an even-par 70 and missed the 1-over cut line.

For half of Scott’s round, it appeared the Australian might falter. Instead, he will take some momentum into Saturday’s third round at 1-under 139 total, six strokes back of leader Brice Garnett.

After registering his first birdie of the day at No. 12, Scott followed with another on 13 and closed with a third at 18 to offset a bogey at No. 9, the only bogey in his last 27 holes.

“Well, I had to do something,” Scott said. “I’ve been in that situation a million times, and you’ve just got to keep playing golf. It’s no time to panic.

“You can’t walk off too disappointed shooting in the 60s around here. At least one thing was accomplished, and I’m going to get to play this great track for another couple of days.”

Scott will have to shoot low to get in position to win the 68th Colonial. His goal Saturday is to get within three or four strokes going into Sunday’s final round, he said.

“You can’t expect to shoot in the low 60s [on consecutive days] and just come from way back here,” Scott said. “The course is just too demanding and we’re not seeing those really, really low scores.”

Scott will also be playing to retain the world’s top ranking, which he’s held since Monday.

Henrik Stenson, third in the world behind the injured Tiger Woods, can overtake Scott if he finishes higher in Europe’s BMW PGA Championship than Scott finishes in Fort Worth.

Another player who could have been in that mix was Kuchar, who could not care less about it, he said.

“Somebody told me I was fourth this week,” Kuchar said. “I never felt paying attention to that did you any good. I felt it was more of a distraction than anything else.”

For Kuchar’s prospects to improve, it will have to happen next week after a three-birdie, three-bogey second round.

He missed the cut for only the second time in his last 37 events.

“I’m hitting it good, putting it good,” Kuchar said. “I just made a couple of bogeys that are uncharacteristic.

“Chalk it up to the crazy game of golf. Didn’t quite go my way this week.”
