Do our policemen really need bulletproof vests?

Well, duh — of course.

National reports tell us over 250 lives are saved every year by protective vests. And despite the NRA insistence that the best way to fight crime is to arm more and more citizens, it is the men and women wearing the blue uniforms who remain our first line of defense against violent crime.

No, the question isn’t whether they need them, it is who is going to pay for them.

For the last 15 years these vests have been paid for by the federal government. However, this year, the funding is being blocked by U.S. Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, who argues that the federal government has “no role” in funding local police departments.

Actually, this fits in quite well with his “take no prisoners” right-wing philosophy.

I find it laughable that Texas politicians love to campaign on the slogan “get government out of our lives” and yet have no problem sticking a hand out when it benefits either the politician or their constituents.

I think they need a new campaign slogan. How about this one: “Don’t mess with our lives unless we need you to mess with our lives.”

That ought to cover it.
