Mansfield High School brought home a pair of trophies from the 14th annual Betty Buckley Awards at Casa Manana on Thursday night.Halli Morgan danced to an Excellence in Choreography award, while Elizabeth Homer bagged Excellence in Costume Design for the school’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie.The awards, which typically honor outstanding achievement in 10 theater categories, added three categories this year: best full-length play and best male and female actors in a full-length play. Creekview High School which earned best musical and best female actor in a musical trophies. The Carrollton school’s production of Shrek the Musical was named the best musical among the six nominated productions, and Destinie Smith won best female lead. All Saints’ Episcopal School and Keller’s Central High School also took home pairs of trophies. All awards included a $1,000 scholarship. The award for best male actor in a musical went to Charlie H. Ray for his efforts in Sweeney Todd at Trinity Valley School. The honor of being the first full-length play to garner a Buckley award went to Trinity Valley for Metamorphoses. Joey DeForest of Lake Country Christian School took the best actor in a play award for his work in Flowers for Algernon. And Ellie Hertel of All Saints’ Episcopal was named best female actor in the new category for her role in Much Ado About Nothing. The ceremony included brief performances by the casts of the nominated musicals. Another highly entertaining moment was a stunning duet from Jekyll & Hyde - In His Eyes, by Addie Morales and Hertel, who were representing Casa Manana’s apprentice program.
