Handicapping the field

Star-Telegram golf writer Jimmy Burch handicaps his top 20 choices, with odds, to win the 2014 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial:

-1 Jordan Spieth Dallas resident and Masters runner-up likes this layout, will be more relaxed than last week at Byron Nelson.

-1 Zach Johnson Hoisted the Colonial hardware in last two even-numbered years (2012, 2010). Clearly due in 2014.

-1 Matt Kuchar No. 4 player in world rankings could make a major move toward the top spot with a victory at Hogan’s Alley.

-1 Adam Scott Newly installed No. 1 in world rankings will be playing only his second tournament since his April 17 wedding.

-1 Jim Furyk Elite ball striker and perpetual Colonial contender is the prototype player to place his name on Wall of Champions.

-1 Rickie Fowler Four career starts, four cuts made, one top-5 finish for Crowne Plaza pitch man who excels in Fort Worth.

-1 John Huh 2012 PGA Tour Rookie of the Year has finished fifth, 11th in two Colonial starts. He’s capable of winning.

-1 Tim Clark Two-time runner-up (2008, 2009) was seventh last year, has not missed weekend rounds in Fort Worth since 2003.

-1 Jimmy Walker Former Baylor star and Boerne resident leads this year’s PGA Tour in victories (3), FedEx Cup points.

-1 Colleyville Contingent At least one of these residents should contend (Ryan Palmer, Chad Campbell, John Rollins, Greg Chalmers).

-1 Hunter Mahan Dallas resident loves this course, plays well in Fort Worth, should be fresh after skipping last week’s Byron Nelson.

-1 Dustin Johnson No. 14 player in world rankings returns to Colonial after finishing seventh Sunday in Irving.

-1 Marc Leishman 2009 PGA Tour Rookie of Year played his way into contention last week at the Nelson, can do the same at Colonial.

-1 Louis Oosthuizen Finished 19th in Fort Worth debut (2012) before missing last year’s event with neck injury.

-1 Fort Worth Frogs TCU grads J.J. Henry and Franklin Corpening have ample course knowledge, large vocal followings.

-1 David Toms 2011 champ owns 68.9 career scoring average in Fort Worth, ranks third in Colonial career earnings ($2.36 million).

-1 Brendon Todd Nelson champ has the chance to complete an unprecedented DFW double in consecutive weeks.

-1 Charley Hoffman Working on active streak of eight consecutive Colonial rounds at par or better.

-1 Jason Dufner No. 22 player in world rankings almost double-dipped both DFW titles in 2012.

-1 Boo Weekley Defending champ is coming off last week’s top-10 finish at the Byron Nelson.
