UT Arlington completed a series sweep of Texas State and secured second place in the Sun Belt Conference with a 1-0 victory over Texas State in the regular-season finale on Saturday.

Brad Vachon and Keegan Hucul combined on the shutout, and John Michael Twichell hit a run-scoring single in the sixth inning for the game’s only run.

Vachon pitched seven innings, giving up three hits. He struck out nine. Hucul did not give up any hits in two innings.

It was the first time since 2006 that the Mavericks had consecutive shutouts. UTA also beat the Bobcats 1-0 on Friday.

The Mavericks, who won their last seven games of the regular season to finish 30-25, will open in the Sun Belt Conference Championship at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday against the No. 7 seed. UTA finished league play 19-11.

“We didn’t get off to the start we hoped for,” UTA coach Darin Thomas said. “We had a little higher expectations at the beginning of the year, but that’s about as good a job as I’ve seen of a team rebounding and making the best of it. We had to do it against some good teams at the end of the year.”
