Dakota Durant singled through the right side to give Aledo a 2-1 win in the eighth inning over Birdville on Friday in the Class 4A Region I quarterfinals at Saginaw Chisholm Trail High School.

The Bearcats (28-6-2), who beat the Hawks 8-3 on Thursday, swept the series and will play the winner of Wolfforth Frenship and Lubbock in the region semifinals next week.

Aledo starter Taco Anderson dueled fellow right-hander Ty Engelhardt for the first seven innings Friday. Anderson would clinch the complete-game win, striking out five in eight innings and giving up five hits.

Engelhardt struck out seven Aledo batters before giving way to Patrick King, who started the eighth. That’s when trouble arose for the Hawks.

Zane Scott led off the inning with a single off the glove of shortstop Robert Salazar up the middle. Leadoff hitter Tyson Mauser then followed with a bunt, and reached base on an error.

King then intentionally walked Wade Raburn and got Zayne Willems to ground into a fielder’s choice. But Durant, the Bearcats’ cleanup hitter, needed two pitches to send a line drive into right field to score Mauser for the walkoff win.

Aledo was down to its last strike Thursday against Birdville, trailing 2-0 when Raburn scored two runners on a Hawks error.

Aledo coach Chad Berry said that momentum spilled into Friday.

“For all intents and purposes, it seemed like Birdville was in control for most of the game [Thursday night]. They had a miscue and we were able to capitalize on it,” Berry said. “I think that carried us through to today.”
