Mansfield Timberview used a pair of big innings to roll to an 8-2 victory over Richland in Game 1 of their Class 5A Region I semifinal series Thursday at Timberview High School.

The Wolves (28-6) exploded for five runs in the second inning and added three more in the fifth.

“We have a tendency to put a big inning together, we have the ability to do that,” Timberview coach Donya Mooney said. “Once we do that, everything seems to flow and we just play little more relaxed.”

Six Wolves batters provided RBIs on the night.

“On any given night, any of them can step up, and that’s how it’s been all season,” Mooney added.

Sophomore pitcher Mariah Denson (24-3) earned the win, allowing five hits while striking out five, including the final two batters of the game.

Richland (27-9) took an early 1-0 lead on Nyka Wood’s RBI single in the first, but Timberview stormed back in the second. With the bases loaded and no outs, Nala Stokes, Chelsea Luddeke and Baylea Higgs each produced consecutive RBI singles before Denson added an RBI single of her own later in the inning.

Richland cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the fifth inning on a Shelby Watson solo home run to straightaway center field, but Timberview responded in the home half of the inning with insurance runs.

First, Alex Taylor’s double scored a run, and then Gabby Littles knocked in two more runs on a line drive to center.

The teams will move to Richland for Game 2 on Friday night.
