Finally, three days after winning The Players Championship with a 28-foot par putt on the famed No. 17 island green at TPC Sawgrass, a rested Martin Kaymer appeared ready to compete in this week’s HP Byron Nelson Championship.

“I didn’t do much practice [Tuesday], I slept, actually,” said Kaymer, whose trip to Texas was delayed by weather in Florida. “When you are sitting at the airport all day, and what happened Saturday and Sunday, it takes a lot out of you.”

Kaymer, from Dusseldorf, Germany, finished in a tie for fifth here last year at the TPC Four Seasons Resort. Skipping the Nelson was not an option.

“I decided to come back here to Byron Nelson because I played decent last year, and I enjoyed the course,” he said. “It was my plan and I usually stick to my plan and my work.”

Kaymer said he has corresponded through email with fellow countryman and Mavericks player Dirk Nowitzki, but the two haven’t met.

“I would love to play a round of golf with him,” Kaymer added.

Nelson, but no Colonial

Dallas resident and former Mansfield High School player Martin Flores is looking to make the cut in Irving for a sixth consecutive year this week.

In the money or not, he will miss the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial next week due to a family member’s wedding.

“My wife’s brother is getting married, so I’ll try to do family first, and I want to be there for him,” he said.

In his fourth year on the PGA Tour, Flores, 32, earned a career-best third two weeks ago at the Wells Fargo Championships.

“This year I’ve shown signs of improvement,” he said. “It’s not always as quick as you’d like, but they’re there and I’ve shown some good results of late.

“It’s been a slow progression of each part of my game getting just a little bit better, and that’s given me more consistency.”

In the news

With six career PGA Tour wins and a world ranking at No. 14, Dustin Johnson only recently achieved TMZ-level notoriety when he became engaged to model and singer Paulina Gretzky — the daughter of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky.

Possessing few golf skills, she annoyed some LPGA players after making the April cover of Golf Digest.

“I mean, it really doesn’t bother me, but it’s fine,” said Johnson, who has been engaged since August. “We travel so much, so when we are not traveling we try to take it easy and lay low.

“But you’ve got to be careful about what you do and where you’re at.”

As far as wedding plans, “I don’t really get much say-so in it,” he said, “but right now there is not a date scheduled, so we’re just enjoying our time.”
