It’s good to be a football coach.TCU’s Gary Patterson earned $2.99 million in base salary in 2012, but a $150,000 bonus and other compensation, including retirement and deferred compensation, pushed his total to $4.01 million, according to the school’s most recent IRS Form 990.Patterson, whose base salary was $2.59 million in 2011, has received raises of $400,000 to $500,000 every year since 2009. His pay reflects a national trend. Median spending for coaches’ compensation has risen 76 percent since 2005 at FBS schools, going from $5.46 million to $9.62 million, according to the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.Seventy-four football coaches, including three assistants, made more than $1 million in 2013, according to USA Today.In 2012, TCU went 7-6 and 4-5 in its first year in the Big 12. The Horned Frogs were 4-8 and 2-7 last season. Texas first-year coach Charlie Strong earns $5 million per year. In December, Texas A&M gave Kevin Sumlin a six-year contract extension, pushing his annual pay to $5 million. Baylor coach Art Briles was given a 10-year contract extension last fall but the terms were not disclosed.TCU men’s basketball coach Trent Johnson earned $1.1 million in 2012, his first year at TCU.Athletic director Chris Del Conte earned just over $800,000, which included $141,772 in bonuses and incentive compensation, plus $67,000 in retirement and other deferred compensation.TCU’s IRS Form 990 covered June 1, 2012, through May 31, 2013.
