Gaetano Mezza wants executions done by rope or bullet (Letters, May 7).

He feels no pity for the people we execute.

Although it is hard to argue with that sentiment, nevertheless Mezza has overlooked something important. Murderers are monsters. But the rest of us are not.

Murderers are the vilest of God’s creatures, but our country and our democracy was built on what was good and decent, not on what is evil.

When we stoop to the level of these wretched creatures, we are no better than they are, and we lose the part of our soul that makes us wonderful and unique.

Feel no pity for the murderer, but believe in a system that does not answer a horrible wrong with one equally horrible, or as with Oklahoma, something that is even worse.

— Steve Maxwell, Fort Worth
