A 47-year-old convicted sex offender was sentenced to life in prison Friday for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old family friend.

Jurors found Anthony Dewayne Cooper guilty of aggravated sexual assault of a child under 14, according to a news release from the Tarrant County district attorney’s office. A short time later, he received an automatic life sentence because he had a prior conviction for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

In spring 2013, a 13-year-old girl told a counselor she had been sexually abused during Christmas break in 2012 by Cooper, whom she considered an uncle. The counselor contacted authorities, who investigated, and a warrant was issued for Cooper.

Cooper led police on a 33-mile high-speed chase from Fort Worth to Dallas in May, before surrendering outside a home in south Oak Cliff.
