UT Arlington junior Emil Blomberg won the men’s 3,000 meter steeplechase on Saturday at the Sun Belt Conference track and field meet and the Mavericks men were in second place in the team standings in San Marcos.

Blomberg finished in 9 minutes, 22.81 seconds, edging South Alabama’s Patrick Rohr, who finished in 9:23.07. UTA had already scored a win in distance running after Craig Lautenslager won the 10,000 meters Friday.

In the men’s javelin, UT Arlington’s Ivan Storic finished second on Friday with a throw of 216 feet, 2 inches.

The UTA men, with 50 points, were five points behind South Alabama heading into Sunday’s final events. Arkansas State was third with 34. UTA was fourth in the women’s standings.

TCU golf

TCU senior Sanna Nuutinen closed a standout collegiate golf career by birding her final two holes en route to a 74 in final-round play Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional.

One day after carding a 67 for the regional’s low second-round score, Nuutinen began Saturday by recording par on her opening eight holes. She then birdied hole No. 9 to close the front nine at 1 under. It also made her 7 under through a 28-hole stretch dating to Thursday’s opening round.

A native of Helsinki, Finland, Nuutinen closed the regional with a 6-over 222.

Nuutinen was a three-time all-conference selection, earning the honor twice in the Mountain West and this season in the Big 12 when she posted a career-best 73.7 stroke average. She won the 2012 Mountain West championship on a fourth-playff hole.

Nuutinen ranks second in TCU history with seven sub-70 rounds.
