Richland coach Brenda Jacobson said she was a tad nervous heading into the sixth inning down two runs to Midland High in Game 3 of the Rebels’ Class 5A regional quarterfinal series.

But she was more confident than nervous that her team would pull through, and it did.

The Rebels (30-8), who forced the third game with a 7-1 win in Game 2, scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth for a 12-11 victory against the Lady Bulldogs and take the series 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Plains Capital Park.

“I was nervous, but yet we still had two at-bats,” Jacobson said. “As bad as these girls wanted it, I knew they were going to pull through, and emotionally I have to keep it together for them. I was a little nervous, but I didn’t let them know that.”

Midland High (25-10) went up 11-9 in the top of the sixth when Brooke Ryan slapped a grand slam over the center field fence to cap a six-run inning.

But in the bottom half of the inning, the Rebels’ Nyka Woods and Maddie McBride — who was 4 for 5 on the day with five RBIs — drove in runs, and another scored on a wild pitch to give Richland a 12-11 lead.

Haley Freyman, who threw all but 2/3 of an inning in the three games, gave up one hit in the seventh but retired the final two to clinch the game for Richland.

The Rebels move on to the regional seminfinals to face Mansfield Timberview, which swept Lewisville in its regional quarterfinal series.
