After a 5-0 season-opening loss to Tulsa on Friday, the Fort Worth Vaqueros FC must improve defensively Sunday at LaGrave Field against the Liverpool Warriors out of North Dallas.

The Warriors are expected to be a cohesive unit, with many players having gained experience together through the ranks of elite North Texas and national youth leagues.

Vaqueros FC allowed four second-half goals to Tulsa but were only outshot 14-10. Jaime Benitez led Vaqueros FC with four shots from left fullback. Midfielder Ricky Mejia added three shots after entering the match in the 67th minute.

“We talked at halftime and the guys wanted to come out and play more of our game, a high-pressure game,” Vaqueros FC coach Mark Snell said. “I think we did well at times, but again just some naive defending, that really sums it up.”

Vaqueros FC started goalkeeper Stephen Nicknish on Friday in place of Zachary Downes, who suffered a broken arm last week. Downes will likely miss the 2014 season.

Admission is free to all moms, in recognition of Mother’s Day.
