Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel loves golf almost as much as he loves football.

He played Pebble Beach last year while in San Diego training with his quarterbacks coach, George Whitfield. On May 3, Manziel played Colonial Country Club for the first time.

He played with a family friend who lives in Fort Worth, and Manziel said he shot in the upper 70s.

“I was really just practicing for the Byron Nelson Pro-Am next week in Las Colinas,” Manziel said.

The Byron Nelson Championship Gold Pro-Am is scheduled Wednesday at TPC Four Seasons in Irving. A Celebrity-Am is scheduled Tuesday at Dallas National.

Manziel, the Heisman Trophy winner at Texas A&M who was a first-round draft pick of Cleveland on Thursday night, said he had been to Colonial a couple of times previously but had never played the course until last week.

“It was great,” he said. “The course is in great shape. We walked, too, so I got a little exercise. It was a good day.”

Critics have scrutinized Manziel’s off-field activities, but he makes it clear football is his No. 1 pursuit.

“I think I’ve done a great job of alleviating concerns with these guys and them getting to know me on a more personable level,” Manziel said. “I’ve answered every question, and anything that they’ve wanted to hear from me.

“So there’s nothing for me to hide, and I don’t think it’s wrong of me to enjoy my life and have fun throughout this whole process. I’ve continued to work hard and do the things I need to do to try and become a better football player, and for me, that’s the main thing.”
